T BARNUM’S DEATH HAPPEND IN 1891 HIS SIX BROTHERS AL, CHARLES, JOHN, GUS,OTTO AND LATER HENRY STILL CARRIED THE CIRCUS FORWARD TO EVENTUALLY ADDING LIVE MUSIC, AN OPERA SINGER FOR A SHORT TIME, A TRAVELING MUSEUM AND A ZOO OF ANIMALS. AS YEARS PAST BY THE COMPETITION IN THE CIRCUS ENTERTAINMENT BEGAN TO GROW AND EVERY CIRCUS WANTED TO BE KNOWN AS THE BEST CIRCUS SHOW POSSIBLE. THE BARNUM’S BROTHERS BEGAN NEGOTIATING FOR OVER A YEAR A PURCHASE OF THEIR BIGGEST CIRCUS COMPETITOR RINGLING BROTHERS BARNUM & BAILEY CIRCUS ALONG WITH AN AGREEMENT TO SHARE THEIR NAME WITH THE BARNUM’S MAKING THE NAME RINGLING BROTHERS AND BARNUM & BAILY CIRCUS OFFICIAL ON JULY 8, 1907 FOR A PRICE OF $400,000 TODAY THIS WOULD BE CLOSE TO $9,800,000 AND THEN SOME. KNOW WITH A BIGGER CIRCUS OPERATION THE BARNUM BROTHERS HAD TWO BIG CIRCUSES COMBINED THAT WERE TWO TRAVELING TOUR CIRCUS SHOWS WITH DIFFERENT PERFORMANCES SEPARATELY BUT AS TIME WENT ON BOTH SHOWS WERE LATER DOWNSIZED TO ONE SHOW BECAUSE OF RAILROAD AND TRAVEL EXPENSES AND WHEN IT WAS WAR TIME THEY HAD HELP AND LABOR SHORTAGES IN 1919.
THE GREATEST IMPACT OF THE RINGLING BROTHERS CIRCUS WAS WHEN THE JOHN RINGLING THE LAST OF THE SIX BROTHERS PURCHASED AMERICAN CIRCUS CORPORATION THAT HAD A CONTRACT TO PERFORM AT MADISON SQUARE GARDEN IN NEW YORK CITY IN 1929 FOR 1.7 MILLION THAT TODAY WOULD BE CLOSE TO $23,994,000 MILLION DOLLARS AND THEN SOME. WITH THE PURCHASE OF ANOTHER CIRCUS AND THE EXPOSURES THEY RECEIVED IN NEW YORK CITY MADE THE RINGLING BROTHERS AND BARNUM & BAILY CIRCUS A HOUSE HOLD NAME WHEN EVER SOMEONE MENTIONED THE WORD CIRCUS AS IT WAS TO BE PROMOTED AS THE GREATEST SHOW ON EARTH. WHEN JOHN RINGLING DIED IN 1936 HE LEFT THE CIRCUS OPERATION TO JOHN RINGLING NORTH HIS NEPHEW THAT HELPED CARRY THE CIRCUS TILL HE STOP OPERATIONS ON JULY 16,1956 IN PITTSBURGH PENNSYLVANIA BECAUSE OF FINANCIAL REASONS BUT HIS WORDS WERE THE MAGIC WILL RETURN SOMETIME SOON AS HE TRIED TO FIND A SOLUTION AND THIS WAS THE LAST TIME THE CIRCUS WAS PERFORMED UNDER THE BIG TOP TENT TILL ON APRIL 3, 1957 A BUSINESS MAN IRVING FIELD THAT WAS A MUSIC CONCERT PROMOTER AT THE TIME AND LATER A BEATLES BAND SHOW PROMOTER TRANSFORMED THE RINGLING BROTHERS AND BARNUM & BAILY CIRCUS FROM THE BIG TOP TENT TO THE NEW INDOOR ARENAS BRINGING THE CIRCUS INDOORS PERMANENTLY VS THE TENT. WITH GREAT SUCCESS AND INTERNATIONAL EXPOSURE AT THE ROME COLISEUM IN ITALY IRVING EVENTUALLY BOUGHT THE RINGLING BROTHERS AND BARNUM & BAILY CIRCUS WITHIN 2 YEARS FOR 2 MILLION DOLLARS TODAY IT WOULD BE $17,000,000 MILLION.
WITH GREAT PLANNING IRVING FELD DESIGNED A TRAVELING TOUR SYSTEM FOR RINGLING BROS & BARNUM & BAILEY CIRCUS AND WITH A NATIONAL ADVERTISING CAMPAIGN & TELEVISION PROGRAM SPECIALS THAT HELPED BRING THE CIRCUS BACK TO ITS GLORY DAYS MAKING IRVING FELD THE GREATEST SHOWMAN ON EARTH ACCORDING TO TIME MAGAZINE.
